If you’re looking for a savory and flavorful sweet potato recipe that’s both comforting and easy to make, this Roasted Garlic and Herb Whipped Sweet Potatoes is exactly what you need. It’s a must-have in my house—one of our absolute favorites!

My favorite way to serve this dish is with my air fryer lamb recipe topped with my delicious chimichurri sauce (insert link on text) and trust me, it takes the meal to a whole new level! The rich, roasted garlic flavor in the whipped sweet potatoes pairs so perfectly with lamb, making every bite bold, balanced, and satisfying. But honestly, you can serve it with just about anything—grilled chicken, roast beef, or even a hearty vegetarian main. No matter what’s on the menu, this dish fits right in.

Serving Size and Storage Tips

This recipe yields approximately 4 servings, depending on the portion size. It’s perfect for a small family dinner or as a side for a larger gathering. If you’re preparing this for a crowd, feel free to double the ingredients!

How to Store Leftovers:

If you have any leftovers (which might be unlikely because it’s so delicious! ), store the whipped sweet potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply warm the potatoes in a saucepan over low heat, adding a splash of cream or milk to restore the creamy texture. You can also microwave them in 30-second intervals, stirring between, until heated through.

Vegan Alternative to Roasted Garlic and Herb Whipped Sweet Potatoes

For a vegan version of this recipe, simply make the following swaps:

  • Butter: Replace the butter with vegan butter or olive oil.

  • Heavy Cream: Use full-fat coconut milk, almond milk, or another plant-based milk of your choice. You may want to add a bit more to achieve the same creamy consistency.

  • Salt: Ensure the salt you use is vegan-friendly (most salt is naturally vegan, but it’s always good to double-check).

By swapping these ingredients, you can still enjoy the creamy, rich flavor of this dish without the dairy.

This Roasted Garlic and Herb Whipped Sweet Potatoes recipe is a family favorite that brings comfort and flavor to any table. Whether you’re pairing it with lamb for a special dinner or adding it to your holiday spread, it’s a dish you’ll want to make again and again!

Ingredients

  • 3 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 head of garlic, peeled
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (adjust for desired consistency)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

Roast the Garlic:

Air fryer Method: Place Garlic into small baking dish. Drizzle with olive oil and roast on both sides for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and soft. Oven Method: Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C) roast for 15-20 minutes until soft and golden brown. Mash the Garlic – mash the roasted garlic into a paste.

Boil the Sweet Potatoes:

While the garlic is roasting, place the sweet potato chunks into a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender. Drain well.

Simmer the heavy cream, Roasted Garlic, Butter, and Parsley:

In a small saucepan, combine the heavy cream, roasted garlic, butter, and chopped parsley. Simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the butter is melted and the cream is heated through. Let it rest for a few minutes to thicken.

Mash the Sweet Potatoes:

Using a potato masher, mash the boiled sweet potatoes. Gradually incorporate the warm milk-butter mixture into the mashed sweet potatoes. Mix until the potatoes are smooth and creamy. Then use a wooden spoon to whip the sweet potatoes for about 2 minutes until smooth

Serve:

Transfer the whipped sweet potatoes to a serving dish. Serve hot and enjoy!
